Downstream

The Downstream editor: a decibel axis with the master at −9.2 LUFS, the −14 target below it, a −4.8 dB arrow between the two and 16.1 dB of peak left marked above; the Delivered knob at 100, and the measured integrated loudness, true peak, range and peak headroom listed beside it.

Free, and compliant

A gated loudness meter with true peak at four times oversampling, built to the published broadcast standard and clearing its own compliance case at −22.9933 LUFS. Nothing to pay, nothing to activate, no address asked for, nothing reported anywhere.

7 delivery targets

Music at −14, spoken word at −16, audiobook at −19, broadcast at −23 and −24, a loud master at −9 and your master untouched: 7 presets, every one of them somewhere you are actually delivering to rather than a number to go and look up.

Hear it, not read it

Every meter hands you a number and stops there. This one turns the number into the gain your target implies and plays it to you, with the session still open: at 0 your own master to the sample, at 100 what the listener is going to get. One knob.

How Downstream works

01

Measured to the standard

Integrated loudness with both gates, loudness range, and true peak by fourfold oversampling. The weighting filter is regenerated from its analogue prototype at whatever sample rate is running, because the table published for 48 kHz is a different filter at 44.1 or 96 and mis-measures silently.

02

The knob is a crossfade

At 0 the output is the input, sample for sample, delayed by the reported latency and nothing else. At 100 it is the delivered result. It is a crossfade, not a scaled gain, and the tests compare it exactly rather than to a tolerance.

03

Peak headroom

True peak minus integrated loudness. Normalisation moves both marks together and cannot change the distance between them, so it describes your master and not the target you picked. Two masters delivered at the same loudness differ only in how much peak is left.

Two masters, one delivered loudness

One track mastered twice, both delivered to −14. What the loud one gave away is still gone.

Downstream is free and unlicensed: it asks for no address, creates no account, and reports nothing to any server. The delivery targets are numbers and kinds of programme, not services — no platform, broadcaster or company is named, endorsed by, or affiliated with this plugin. The figures are published targets, set by the people who run those paths and free to change; the target here is a control you set, not a promise about anyone’s policy. Nothing here is measured from, matched to or named after anything on sale.
